Here we see that most of today’s cellphones’ GPS traces are “all over the parking lot,” thus will degrade the quality of OSM when making a map from them,

But yes, you could say having a path on the map is better than no path.

Get inspired by mapping highways' radars and mirrors - mar 14 sep 2021 - 9:08

The idea to map radars and mirrors of the Czech highways was raised in the mailing list of the Czech community. One of the comments is questioning about how to track the work done–and that’s exactly the problem to be solved by the damn project. (Note that the idea to map radars and mirrors of the Czech highways is still just an idea and there are no further steps done yet I’m aware of.)

I already wrote two Get inspired by … diaries. These were the potential HOT tasking manager improvements and the Tanga Building Footprints Import. This diary discuss the use of the damn project for tracking the work done on highways.

Create area

The damn project helps mappers by dividing some big area into smaller squares that a human can map. How this applies to highways?

It’s possible to upload two kinds of GeoJSON boundary files to the damn manager. If the FeatureCollection has member ‘name’ then divide to squares function is NOT used. Moreover, I’ve updated the damn project to understand what to do with a feature containing a LineString geometry: create a “square” with the border around the LineString. (“Square” here means a square of an area of the damn project.)

So… when you download some highway=motorways within some interesting bounding box (I mean from overpass API in JOSM,) save as GeoJSON, and add name member, you are able to upload that as GeoJSON boundary file to the damn manager.

Note that I experimented with joining ways to make larger squares of an area. The JOSM damn plugin then refused to automatically download the OSM data of a square because the square was too large, and the data had to be downloaded manually.


The mappy client may help to visualize the area. An example is area 2352 and it looks way better with background image switched off. The JOSM damn plugin, light client, or panel using map random square/map nearest square are better options, though.

Yet one minor update to the damn project is to splitting of the squares. I added split horizontally and split vertically commit types that are currently possible in the mappy client. This is because splitting of a highway square led sometimes to tiny squares in the middle of the highway square. (Imagine highway from the left bottom to the right top of the square splitted to four sub-squares.)


It’s possible to track the work done for highways mapping. I know the damn clients could be (significantly) better. I still hope for someone to come and write their own client for the damn server API from scratch. That would be fantastic, at least because the development would become decentralized. Until then, the mappers have no option than suffer from my design.

And that’s about tracking the work done on highways. I wonder if logging the data and importing them with the idea of the last get inspired by … diary wouldn’t be a better option for this particular project.

Building Model update around NCD( Waigani, Boroko and Downtown POM) - mar 14 sep 2021 - 3:52

Today as of this week, I started editing the missing map details around the Gordons( esp the National Stadium), Rita Flynn Netbal Centre, Sir John Guise Stadium as well as commercial Buildings around Waigani area. It took me almost 3 days before the 3-D model of these Stadium(Sporting facilities) appeared in I hope to see these models also reflected in

Although these are LOD 2 models( in my context), I may hope to try pulling those models into Blender-OSM to further enhance these Buildings, in the future( to take 3D modeling a further step up). I hope to still edit areas that aren’t not mapped out around Port Moresby areas, such as Gerehu Suburbs which are still missing details. Alot still needs to be done around our National Capital city which is still lacking map elements in OSM.

I have done all my BEST and its almost a year that I have actively been editing maps around Port Moresby area esp. the Metropolitan area where high-rise Buildings and densely-packed detached buidings are.

One fundamental function that anyone can use is the Building tags; as I am using only the ID Editor as I don’t have access to use JOSM to verify if my tags are valid. Thanks goes to the OSM moderators who are providing me helpful tips&insights on how I can edit the maps with any error. I am still pressing and pulling myself up-to-date with OSM HELP menu and correcting myself to re-edit feature entries which are erroneous.

Thankyou all and once again happy mapping to all the Mappers around Papua New Guniea and to the Moderators who are taking their time to correct us.

Chères membres de la communauté Openstreetmap, j’ai l’honneur de déposer ma candidature en tant que membre du conseil d’administration du Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team ( HOT) pour les raisons suivantes:

Je suis devenu un contributeur actif de la communauté OpenStreetMap grâce à une mission de l’équipe Humaritarian Openstreetmap en 2013. Avec l’aide de cartographes bénévoles, nous avons pu mettre en place la communauté Openstreetmap Sénégal, puis l’association Openstreetmap Sénégal - dont j’ai été le secrétaire général depuis 2018.

Depuis 2015, avec le soutien de l’association française Projet Espace OSM Francophone (ProjetEOF) et Les Libres Géographes (LLG), j’ai pu participer à plusieurs missions de renforcement des capacités en Afrique francophone. J’ai développé un ensemble de compétences et d’expériences qui peuvent être utilisées au sein du conseil d’administration de HOT US Inc.

Afin de rendre HOT plus inclusif et diversifié, la participation de membres de la communauté africaine et francophone au niveau exécutif est importante. Cela permettra de prendre en compte les aspects uniques et spécifiques des réalités au sein de ces communautés. De plus, il y a encore beaucoup à faire en termes d’actions de cartographie car de nombreux espaces sont actuellement absents de la carte dans ces territoires, d’où la présence de personnes pouvant aider à comprendre les enjeux et la particularité de ces communautés au sein du conseil d’administration de HOT.

Dear members of the Openstreetmap community, I am honored to apply as a member of the Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team (HOT) Board of Directors for the following reasons: I became a an active contributor of the OpenStreetMap community thanks to a mission of the Humaritarian Openstreetmap team in 2013. With the help of volunteer cartographers, we were able to set up the Openstreetmap Senegal community, then the Openstreetmap Senegal association - where I served as the General Secretary since 2018.

Since 2015, with the support of the French association Projet Espace OSM Francophone (ProjetEOF) and Les Libres Géographes (LLG), I have been able to participate in several capacity building missions in Francophone Africa. I have developed a set of skills and experiences that can be used on the board of HOT US Inc.

In order to make HOT more inclusive and diverse, the participation of members of the African and Francophone community at the executive level is important. This will allow for the unique and specific aspects of the realities within these communities to be taken into account. In addition, there is still much to be done in terms of mapping actions as many spaces are currently missing on the map in these territories, hence the presence of people who can help understand the issues and particularity of these communities within HOT’s board of directors makes sense.

With HOT’s desire to make the organization more inclusive and community-centric, I am sure that the human, technical and organizational knowledge that I have acquired over the years in the French-speaking community in Africa will be a valuable contribution to help the organization meet this challenge.

Join the OSMF Engineering Working Group to support the OSM developer ecosystem - lun 13 sep 2021 - 22:28

To support the development of open source software around OpenStreetMap, the OSM Foundation has recently launched the Engineering Working Group (EWG). The group intends to support open source software projects with direct funding, mentorship programs, and by offering a platform for coordination.

Why this working group?

OpenStreetMap relies on a vast ecosystem of open source software. This includes the tools used by mappers to understand and contribute data, the software powering our database servers and website, the libraries and frameworks used by developers to build consumer-facing applications around OSM data, and many of these applications themselves.

The development teams creating these software products are generally independent entities, separate from the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF). This is by design: The OSM community values do-ocracy and decentralization, so the OSMF does not manage software projects. However, that does not mean there is no room for the OSMF to support this vital ecosystem!

What we do

The Engineering Working Group (EWG) is charged with

  • Handling software development paid for by the OSMF, including the distribution of grants. This will involve putting out calls for proposals on tasks of interest, and accepting proposals on other tasks.
  • Offering a platform for coordination of software development efforts across the OSM ecosystem. We want to encourage standardization and shared efforts between projects by bringing together developers with similar interests. This work also includes responding to emails and directing people at other people or appropriate resources.
  • Managing OSM’s participation in software mentorship programs such as Google Summer of Code, which help grow the OSM developer community.

For handling paid development, “tasks” include development of new features, maintenance of code, documentation, and other tasks that improve the developer experience. When we are ready to start providing grants, we will encourage applications from skilled individuals who aren’t professional developers, professional contractors or companies, as well as those who are.

The OSMF has previously supported software projects through microgrants as well as separately with funding for Nominatim, osm2pgsql, Potlatch 2 and iD. With EWG, this kind of support will be placed on a more solid foundation.

In our first round we will look for projects that don’t need much management and focus the bulk of our efforts on core software. Like with all work paid for by the OSMF, the principles of the Hiring Framework will apply.

Whom we seek

As a group that is just getting started, we’re eagerly looking for additional working group members.

We would particularly welcome people knowledgeable about technology used in key OSM systems, such as the rails port, Ruby on Rails in general, and the cgimap implementation of the main OSM API, as well as those who can help with knowledge domains, such as user interface design, which are not well covered by the existing members.

However, you do not need to know any particular technology to participate! So if you have experience with the OSM software ecosystem, developing software, or managing software development, consider joining us!

Challenge to the HOT Voting Membership: A Top 5 List - lun 13 sep 2021 - 1:58

The HOT Board and Chairperson Election period this year started this month of September. Both positions require that you are a voting member to be able to run, nominate and vote.

I’d like to share five (5) challenges or “dare” to the HOT Voting members (which includes Board members and chairperson).

#1 Unengaged membership: How can we engage 1M contributors if we cannot engage our 217 (and growing) voting members?

HOT received funding from the Audacious Project last year - “Over the next five years, HOT will engage one million volunteers to map the places that are home to one billion people.”

When I applied for my staff position, this has been one of my strong drivers/motivations: to meaningfully engage contributors/communities (including the voting membership), and benefit from the work that HOT does. I believe the voting membership is one of the most important of these communities but hasn’t been prioritised in recent years.

I challenge the HOT membership, how can you help engage your fellow voting members, esp. those you nominated as a voting member and vice versa?

#2 Community Participation: How do we actively participate and support communities/groups locally (your local communities), regionally (eg Open Mapping Hubs), and globally (e.g. HOT / OSMF Working Groups)?

HOT shifted from global to regional structure to ensure that power, decision-making and resource allocation happen much closer to the communities we seek to support and in which we want our impact to be. How do you think the voting members can support the Regional Hubs and local communities?

I challenge the HOT membership to play an active role in the Regional hubs. Not only that, HOT has working groups and committees, please consider joining one! And most importantly, I challenge you to continuously actively participate and support your local communities!

#3 Community diversity: How can we be advocates of diversity and inclusion?

In addition to Tyler’s What HOT’s Board Needs: A Top 5 List (which I view as more focused on “skills” that we need), I would like to emphasize the we also need to consider community diversity both in participation and leadership.

I challenge the HOT membership to respect diversity, encourage and listen to unheard opinions and perspectives, be mindful and examine your views, and take action to enable inclusion.

#4 Community diversity in Language: How can we localize HOT / OSM activities (map and non-map contributions)?

“My English is not too fluent to be a member of the Board even though I am very interested in participating and sharing my vision as a French-speaking African community of collaborative mapping with HOT.” - from a community leader/voting member who would like to run for Board.

Language is a dimension of diversity and inclusion but I believe it deserves its own spot and should be highlighted. Ivan Gayton (2021) shared, “The default to English puts non-English speakers at a systemic disadvantage throughout HOT and humanitarian open mapping activities.” And this has been true since the start! Official documents, websites, etc are all in English, how can we reach non-English speaking communities we wish to serve and support?

I am pleased that the Election Committee has taken into account the language barrier. Before, we only have live discussions. In this year’s election, we will send a list of questions to the candidates so that they can prepare their answers, e.g. make necessary translations if needed, post it in medium they are comfortable with, and then have a live discussion.

PS. We have been doing this in the CommunityWG webinars which enabled more participation and diverse speakers! :)

#5 Community diversity in Leadership: “Who leads the mapping and storytelling matters.” (Garcia, 2020)

HOT has its western roots since its incorporation in 2010. Only after six (6) elections (in 2017 Election), did we have non-western leaders to serve in the Board. And as of date, only 4 voting members from Asia, 2 from Africa, and 1 from Latin America served in the Board. How can we improve this?

My last challenge for the membership is who will you vote as our leaders?

PS. As I am part of the OSMF membership (as Associate member since 2019), I would like to challenge the OSMF membership with these points (or whatever applies) as well. ;)

Smoothness and MTB_Scale tags on paths - dim 12 sep 2021 - 21:12

My mapping of the paths used by cyclists has evolved over the years. If there are other keen cyclist mappers out there I’d be grateful if you would have a look at this post and say if you feel it is reasonable. My cycling friends and family use apps like Strava and Komoot to log their rides and increasingly to suggest routes. These same friends often have more than one type of bike - maybe a road bike, a gravel bike, a trail bike and sometimes a specialised downhill rig. Some of the apps will suggest different routes depending on which bike you specify. I’m not sure how these apps judge which paths are suitable when they are creating, say, a ’gravel’ ride but I would think the surface, smoothness and mtb_scale tags would be important. I now try to give all the cycleable paths that I map a smoothness tag and if they aren’t asphalt or concrete I give them an mtb_scale tag as well. Studying the descriptors for the different smoothness values makes me think : If the trail was ‘excellent’, ‘good’ or ‘intermediate ’ I would be happy on my road bike. If it was ‘bad’ I would prefer a gravel bike. If it was ‘very bad’ I would prefer a trail bike. If it was ‘horrible’ I would still use a trail bike but I would be up on the pedals and concentrating! If it was ‘very horrible’ I might ride it, downhill only, probably on a full sus rig. Studying the descriptors for the mtb_scale values, both on the OSM wiki and elsewhere, I think I would use a gravel bike if it was 0, a trail bike if it was 1, a trail bike but up on the pedals if it was 2 and downhill only on a full sus bike if if it was 3. So although they are measuring slightly different things there is a sort of equivalence between the smoothness values and the mtb_scale values for the non-asphalt trails. And I am now using this when mapping. For example if I look at a path and think it’s too rough for my gravel bike but it would be straightforward on a trail bike I will map it as Smoothness=Very Bad and MTB_Scale=1. Does that seem reasonable? I’d be grateful for any thoughts from other mapping cyclists.

OsmAnd Shows Public-transportation Route So Nicely - dim 12 sep 2021 - 17:28

I mapped a few train and bus route relations, installed a new map into OsmAnd and checked how they are shown on it.

Frankly, it works so nicely! It shows how often a train or a bus departs and where it stops. I think it helps users to visit a place, using a public-transportation.

Ideally, I would like OsmAnd to show tag:opening_hours. Applying it, perhaps it can check whether a route is available now and give users more applying searching results. And a new tag that shows how many passengers crowd into the carriages or the bus (not number, but like: ‘Filled with people,’ ‘Some can’t have sheets,’ ‘Some sheets are empty’ or ‘It’s almost empty on train’), which I come up with, can help them like Google does.

Totally it works so greatly.

It motivated me much to map more public-transportation route relations.

Mapping campaigns

  • The OSM-US project to map playgrounds in Philadelphia (we reported earlier) was completed on 1 September.
  • Jeroen Hoek noticed a page on the wiki relating to a proposal to regularise the tag china_population. The tag seems to designed to change the way some larger cities in China are rendered.
  • The authorities of the French commune of Torsac have recently completed a project to name streets and assign house numbers. Wilfried, a commune representative, asked , on the OSM-FR forum, why these addresses and street names do not yet appear in OSM. The answer turned out to be somewhat complex, as the long thread in the forum shows. However, the issue was resolved by Christian Quest.
  • Andrés (User AngocA) from Bogotá explained > in a diary entry how to analyse Notes and how, if there are many Notes open in the area of interest, you can develop a strategy to close them.

  • Monika Tota asked members of the OpenStreetMap Polska group how they tag properties that are somewhat subjective, like smoothness=good vs intermediate or wheelchair=yes vs limited.   • Noé discovered that a town in Ivory Coast with a population of over 30,000 bears his first name, Noé. It wasn’t mapped on #OpenStreetMap, so he took care of it.
  • Feye Andal shared that Youthmappers in the Philippines grew from four to nine local chapters in just one year.
Humanitarian OSM
  • HOT published their Annual Report for 2020 (covering the period from July 2020 to June 2021). Note the report is large and may load slowly.
  • The Open Mapping Hub – Asia Pacific, organised by HOT, is launching a newsletter to share highlights of open mapping projects, communities, and opportunities across the region and invites you to subscribe.
  • has released a 2021 Fall foliage prediction map showing the progressive change of leaves’ colour through the USA.
  • used > data from the French national statistical institute, INSEE, in order to map 4,000 hairdressers in France with, mostly bad, puns in their names. While using OpenStreetMap as a baselayer, clicking on a shop marker links to Google Maps.
  • The Ordnance Survey, Britain’s national mapping agency, withdrew support for OS Open Space on 31 August. OpenSpace was launched in 2008 using OpenLayers. OSM’s founder, Steve Coast, worked as a consultant to the OS on the initial project. Replacement services continue to be available via the new hub, but a number of existing applications and websites no longer work.
Open Data
  • After a small pilot project in 2017, the Church of England announced their intention to map graves in all 19,000 churchyards in their care. The mapping, funded by Historic England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Caring for God’s Acre, uses LiDAR and is expected to take seven years. It is hoped that the resulting data will be open.

מועדון אופניים לילדים ולמבוגרים. יוצא מרעננה ומגיע לכל הארץ. כושר, טכניקה בשטח, מירוצים, טיולים, אושר גדול. חוויות על אופניים לבוגרים וילדים ממתחילים ועד ספורט הישגי. אימוני כושר, טכניקה, טיולים. הפעילות כוללת קואצ'ינג למצוינות, בריאות, ואהבה. חלוקה לגילים לילדים, נוער, בוגרים והתאמת רמה למתחילים מתקדמים ותחרותיים. ספורט, הישגים, שליטה באופניים, זה"ב לילדים ולכולם המון צחוקים. שיעורי טכניקת שטח כולל כיוון ארגונומי בסיסי והמלצות רכישה ותחזוקה. צוות מאמנים מנוסה ואהוב.
