Q&A for Board Election 2021

blogs.openstreetmap.org - mar 21 sep 2021 - 15:20

Hi all,

Here’s my response to the question listed on wiki page for the board election. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Team/Board_Elections_2021
Please feel free to comment or message/mail me, talk to you soon!

By Arnalie Vicario
Q1. What is/are the impact/s of the shift from global to regional structure of HOT on voting members?
A1. Strengthen the regional/local community is good in many ways including reducing the language barrier and harmonizing the open culture to local. Voting member is usually the opinion leader of local/regional community. As a result, about the impact of the shift from global to regional structure, it could be good to HOT.

Q2. Conversely, how do you think the voting members should interact (e.g. what is their role) with the Regional Hubs?
A2. Regional hubs can assist the voting members and the local communities to work more aligned to the vision/mission of HOT. The active voting members may talk with regional hubs more often for the harmonization of local/personal interests and HOT objectives.

By Matt Gibb
Q3. How can we support HOT volunteers who may experience burnout as we work towards HOT’s Audacious goals (including Voting Member and non-Voting Member volunteers), while the number of HOT paid staff grows?
A3. Burnout in community happens, so the responsibility of paid staff is getting heavier. We should facilitate more communications so we “speak out before burnout”. We also could take turns (flying geese paradigm) to be responsible for the tasks towards HOT’s audacious goals that potentially burnout community members.

By Heather Leson
Q4. What are the most important things the HOT board should be doing for the 1. membership 2. board 3. staff 4. global OSM community?
A4. (1) to facilitate the friendly (in many ways) environment for our community members. (2) be the plus to the operation of HOT. (3) share the experience and expertise. (4) be more influential in global community.

Q5. What are your views on an operational versus strategic board for HOT?
A5. Operational board is to assist HOT organization/community running smoothly and grow as expected, and the strategic board can envision the potential & future, connect the resources to help HOT to get to its objective.

By Jorieke Vyncke
Q6. HOT is traditionally not much focussed on the mapping of places where people are sufferring from violence and conflict, eg Yemen, Ethiopia, etc. Since many humanitarian organisations working in these places to serve the population could benefit a lot from better map data, should this become a bigger focus of HOT?
A6. “That missing maps are no longer a factor in human suffering or loss of life in humanitarian crises“ is one of the objectives for our Audacious objectives. Also, to get to 1M mappers all over the world, I believe those humanitarian issues should be considered just like inter-commutable diseases or disasters. We might need a good pitch deck to let our community knows more about why mapping can change/help those situations.

By Mikel Maron
Q7. The basics of HOT’s governance model were set 10 years ago in very different circumstances (nominated membership, board members selected from and voted by membership). What are the strengths and weaknesses of HOT’s governance model in 2021, and what would you advocate changing?
A7. I believe the purpose of board members is the assistance to HOT (from the various perspectives to plan and operate). With the elected board and the invited strategic board, I think it’s fine for the governance model of HOT so far.

Q8. As HOT’s budget and staffing increases rapidly, what are the most important roles for the Board to take?
A8. Communication and sharing, board should listen and talk to the staff and community, also share the expertise and experience for HOT to grow towards the audacious goals.

Q9. What is working well in HOT? What is not working well in HOT?
A9. We are great from the perspective of operation, we got good projects, we had our reputation in humanitarian sector, and we incubate good local communities. Maybe we can broaden the participation and the topics of mapping (e.g. the violence and conflict mapping mentioned by Jorieke), bring it up and make it transparent to our community.

By Election Committee
Q10. How have you contributed to HOT’s efforts over the past year?
A10. Yeap I served as board member in 2017, been a voting members for a while. I also helped to organize State of Map Taiwan in 2017, promote HOT in MSF event in Taiwan at 2018, and actively promote/use OSM data in disaster response sector for the recent years. Got the idea of ontology for data quality (could be the profile starting from disaster related scenarios) and perhaps this could be my next contribute to HOT/OSM.

Q11. What are your thoughts on building a welcoming space for communications around humanitarian mapping and OSM as a whole? As such, how would you address conflicts arising between HOT affiliated people/organizations and members of the broader OSM community (eg OSMF members, Local Chapters, individual mappers in an area)?
A11. Communication is one of the important things from my perspective, listen and harmonize, should be helpful for building a welcoming space. The roots of HOT and OSM community are the same, we want to map and want to make it useful to the world. Just HOT run the organization and community in a (relatively more) systematic way. I’m quite optimistic to the conflicts (or just some misunderstanding) between HOT and OSMF.

Q12. With Audacious now in its second year, what do you think of HOT’s current goals? What do you believe could be improved/what is missing from HOT’s priorities?
A12. Inclusion is one of the keys to achieve our audacious project. Having an environment to talk to each other, to share and recognized by community, and to engage various of stakeholders towards audacious objectives.

Q13. Do you see any potential conflicts of interest with you being elected to the Board/Chair position?
A13. Nope.

Q14. How will you ensure that Audacious continues to be implemented with community as its focus?
A14. Need to work with community and keep it aligned to the planned strategy. Not an easy job and can’t be done by one or a few, yet with a group of community members and staff who believe it’s working, it’s gonna be fine.

Q15. What do you see as the greatest challenge the organization is facing strategically, and as a board member, how do you plan on approaching these challenges?
A15. We now have clear objectives, we shall trust the staff, trust the community, properly review the measurable output, be agile and keep aligning the HOT operation towards the goals. There’s no perfect solution for it, yet I think we can have mutual understanding to fulfill the objectives, and make impact to the world, as what we believe from the very beginning.

blogs.openstreetmap.org - lun 20 sep 2021 - 23:04

low-res Strava workflow for missing roads

blogs.openstreetmap.org - lun 20 sep 2021 - 16:17
what is this about?

this entry describes a possible workflow for identifying missing road segments, thanks to the standard low-res Strava heat map. you may also use it to reclassify all those ‘highway=track’ that so many remote mappers keep creating for our ‘surface=unpaved’ unclassified and tertiary roads.

the mapping practice here described is totally manual, and quite obviously its speed will be inversely proportional to the precision you want to achieve.

preparation steps
  • install JOSM
  • in JOSM, activate the low resolution Strava heat layer
    • do that by editing the Imagery Preferences settings,
    • look for Strava among the available default entries,
    • select the cycling and running heat map,
    • activate it.
    • you will need to restart JOSM after activating the new imagery layer source.
typical editing session prepare for mapping
  • add the OpenStreetMap (Carto) Standard layer,
  • roughly choose an area of interest,
  • add the Strava heatmap layer, but do change its transparency to 50%,
  • add your favourite Aerial photography layer (here I will be using Bing because I will show screenshots and the Bing license allows didactic and instructional use. in mapping I tend to prefer Maxar.)
  • order the layers so that:
3: is Strava, on top of both:
2: your favourite aerial photography layer,
    1: the Carto standard map,
identify a missing road
  • hide layer 2 (click on its corresponding “eye” icon, or use the keys Alt-2).
at this point your layers pane should look like this:
  • repeatedly toggle visibility of layer 3, to identify where Strava shows road usage and our map shows nothing (or roads marked as agricultural tracks).
a rather extreme example might look like this:

  • download the OSM data for the area, obviously you need to include any previously existing elements, to which you want to connect your new roads.
map the road

this is my personal practice, yours might be whatever it might be, this is just what I am comfortable with.

  • ‘a’ (the draw nodes tool), draw a way, very roughly following strava, not looking at the aerial photography.
    • start the road by zooming in
    • zoom out and roughly draw the body
    • zoom in again and connect the end
  • hide Strava, show layer 2 with aerial photography.
  • ‘w’ (the improve way accuracy tool) (keep the Ctrl key pressed, so that you will be adding nodes, release it to move a node)
    • make your road follow the aerial photography.
    • zoomed in, you will occasionally refine an earlier node.
    • again occasionally the area might be obstructed by trees or clouds and you might want to show the Strava layer:
restarting after losing track

still occasionally, I do loose track of which roughly mapped roads I still have to refine. fortunately JOSM has a quite powerful search option.

  • Ctrl-F and select all new nodes.
  • this shows where the new nodes are too distant from each other.
  • tag the road as ‘unclassified’ (very likely) or ‘tertiary’ (for heavier traffic).
extra value: fill in the blanks

something that happens quite often, mappers stop a road when time is up, even if the road does continue. it is very helpful to routing programs and services if we provide a connected network of roads, rather than scattered segments.

  • a candidate for filling in a gap:
repeat
  • preferably, hide the data layer, which will add a mask on top of whatever raster you’re using. and: “da capo”, from “identify a missing road”.
the end

while writing this diary entry, I mapped these roads:

do not forget to tag the new objects yourself!

blogs.openstreetmap.org - dim 19 sep 2021 - 22:45

➕ Використовує дані OSM;

Mapping
  • A long thread on the Swiss mailing list, split over several months, discussed how to map the border between Switzerland and Italy around Monte Generoso, where the precise line is uncertain. Earlier discussions occurred in July and August.
  • John Stanworth wants to further improve his mapping of smoothness=* and mtb:scale=* and asked other cycling contributors for comments on his views.
  • Hiddenhausen asked > , on the German forum, what the use of the tag landuse=street_green might mean. It appears to be an ad hoc attempt to refine the use of landuse=grass for grassy highway verges and medians.
  • Voting is underway, until Saturday 25 September, for headlight=* to reflect the legal requirement on some roads to use your headlights.
  • SK53 clarified with examples that, in his opinion, there is widespread misuse of the sac_scale=* tag for real alpine climbing routes, which the Swiss Alpine Club grades with a completely different scale.
  • User Koreller asked for feedback on their contribution a guide to mapping North Korea available on the OSM wiki.
Community
  • Amanda McCann shared with us what she did in OpenStreetMap during August 2021.
  • Numerous OSM contributors have received ‘friend’ requests through the OSM website which appear to be phishing attacks. Not surprisingly this has received comments on the German forum >

Imports
  • Marius David (marius851000) intends > importing open data about restaurants in the Pays de la Loire (France), and he is seeking inputs on how to do it before starting.
OpenStreetMap Foundation
  • Simon Poole justified his insistence that the OSMF register trademarks, whilst he served on the LWG, by referring to a recent trademark debacle involving PostgreSQL. A Spanish not-for-profit registered ‘PostgreSQL’ as a mark in Spain, and has recently applied for broader coverage in the European Union and USA. The latter application was recently abandoned, but the ‘PostgreSQL Community’ is still live.
Education
  • The UN Mappers team has announced the launch of an internship programme. Several open positions relate to OSM in mapping and feature extraction, social media and communication, geospatial analysis, and map visualisation and design. The internships are fully remote or in-person at the UN duty stations in Brindisi (Italy) and Valencia (Spain), and are open to all nationalities. These internships are an opportunity to work in an international environment, gaining experience and developing high skills in the humanitarian field. The deadline to apply is Saturday 9 October.
Humanitarian OSM
  • The monthly HOT Tech Working Group meeting has been put on hold. The hot_tech team has convened a number of working groups specific to individual technologies or projects such as the OSM Galaxy Project. Anyone who wishes to participate in these is requested to fill out a form.
  • HOT announced the appointment of Dr Ibrahima Cisse as Director of the Western and Northern Africa Open Mapping Hub.
  • The Open Mapping Hub Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), organised by HOT, announced a range of Open Mapping grants. Expressions of interest are invited immediately, with formal proposals expected during October.
  • The HOT Quality Control and Assurance Working Group have developed and released the ‘Problem User Escalation Document’, which outlines the steps in escalating data quality problems encountered with users (mappers/validators).

Did you know …
  • … what the charging regime is for using the HOT Tasking Manager? Also known as the Tasking Manager Sustainability Model.
  • … there is a page on the OSM Wiki for noting sites that use OSM but don’t provide correct attribution?
  • … that OpenCage post geographical trivia via Twitter on the last Friday of each month (hashtag #fridaygeotrivia)?
Other “geo” things
  • The Colorado Department of Transport falsely changed the status of an open road to closed, not only on their own site (albeit briefly), but directly on Google, Waze, TomTom and AppleMaps. A major highway Interstate-70 was actually closed due to mudslides, causing an increase in traffic on a minor road. The fictitious road closure was meant to discourage further traffic build-up.
  • Using the example of the ‘Chinese Name of Lidl’ Yunus reflected on the challenge for western companies to select a Chinese name for their brand.

New Opensnowmap for mobile devices

blogs.openstreetmap.org - dim 19 sep 2021 - 9:27

The new mobile version of Opensnowmap is now available after a major overhaul at https://www.opensnowmap.org/mobile.html.

This shouldn’t change a lot of things if you are already used to the mobile website. There is however a new control to get more information about the OpenStreetMap ski pistes data accessible from a simple a tap on the map.

Simply select the arrow from the search menu, and tap the map near a piste. The round cursor can be dragged toward another piste at will.

Under the hood

The 8 years old OpenLayers 2 has been replaced by the excellent version 6 of the map library.

Switch2osm "Manually building a tile server" page for Ubuntu 21.04

blogs.openstreetmap.org - sam 18 sep 2021 - 16:49

I’ve added a new page to the switch2osm guide: “Manually building a tile server (Ubuntu 21.04)”. The work that the Debian developers have done to include the required software inside Debian 11 is now in Ubuntu 21.04, so there’s actually less setup work needed than in previous Ubuntu versions.

Ubuntu 21.04 isn’t an LTS release, so Debian 11 or Ubuntu 20.04 are still the recommended options for servers that are expected to stay around for a while. One of the regular faux pas with the Natural Earth download site has just been and gone, but the guide includes a workaround in case problems reoccur there.

Unrelated to Ubuntu 21.04 directly, there’s currently a bit of an issue with the lack of feedback that part of the OpenStreetMap Carto setup gives to the user, but work is under way to improve that (I hope things will be able to return to where they were last year with this). I’ve tried to explain here and in the other guides that it’s to be expected that “things just go quiet for up to an hour”, and that eventually it will complete.

blogs.openstreetmap.org - sam 18 sep 2021 - 15:13

Renseignons les adresses d'Alès - Fin

blogs.openstreetmap.org - mer 15 sep 2021 - 23:41

  • K (plug-in HouseNumberTaggingTool )

blogs.openstreetmap.org - mer 15 sep 2021 - 11:00

No i mam problem z nazwą multipoligonu…

ROAD CLASSIFICATION DECISION MATRIX

Default Starting Ranks: [UK] [IRL] [DE] [FR] [IT]

INTERSTATE/MOTORWAY motorway [US:I] [UK:M] [IE:M] [DE:A] [FR:A] [IT:A]

NHS (DIV) trunk [UK:A(T)] [IE:N] [DE:B] [FR:N] [IT:SS]

US (ALL) / NHS (UNDIV) primary [UK:A] [IE:N] [DE:L] [FR:D] [IT:SS]

STATE PRIMARY secondary [UK:B] [IE:R] [DE:K] [IT:SP]

STATE SEC/COUNTY tertiary [UK:C]

TOWNSHIP residential

other things to think about for status changes: for Primary to Trunk: NHS mainline/some Strahnet (exc intermodal connnectors) +1 controlled access (limited intersections) +1 divided highway +1 interchanges at intervals +1 super-2 in places +1 or upgrade to motorway super-2 with widened centerline, rumble strips, mandatory headlight usage. Trunk means “watch out”; dangerous roads serving the role of a motorway one with design/safety compromises.

Secondary to Primary: high relative traffic +1 wide shoulders +1 Interstate Business Route +1 (not automatically in NHS!)

Tertiary to Secondary: 4 or 6-lane divided +1 through route +1 retail strip +1 interchanges with an Interstate (case-by-case)

Residential to Tertiary Divided, serving major retail centers and industrial parks +1 MD: Has yellow center line and is through/collector route VA: Numbered Secondary 600-999, selected routes above 1000 (VA numbers almost every road, but these lower numbers are usually important) PA: Numbered SR 1xxx-4xxx WV: County Routes (whole & fractionals)

for drops in status: numerous traffic signals in quick succession (drop from trunk) -1 retail strip (usually cause for above): drop from trunk to primary, but up from tertiary to secondary if divided. -1/+1 low speed limit -1 city environment -1 narrow shoulders -1 twists/turns/grades -1 (in relation to nearby straighter roads serving the same general direction)

NHS Overview: If divided and few intersections: trunk If connecting sections of full motorway or alternates between: trunk If undivided but otherwise controlled access: trunk Super-2: motorway with oneway=no

If undivided without controlled access: primary If divided without controlled access, many cross streets: primary
